Hence, the Citadel was forced to take an affirmative action to stop employment discrimination. A move in this direction was the Affirmative Action Plan or the Entity Plan undertaken by the Citadel. The story flowed from beginning to end, characterizing the changes in Jimmy Cross as he dealt with his emotions as well as the responsibility to the men in his platoon. In the beginning of the story he was depic ted as a Jones 2 boyish leader with dreams of Martha being his escape from the senseless reality of the war. When one of his men was killed he accepted the responsibility and guilt, which changed him into the leader he thought he should have been – forgetting Martha and protecting his men. The good deed stays in my mind and when I go shopping if I see any products produced by that company I am inclined towards supporting the firm. The use of social responsibility adds value to the brand of a corporation. John Mackey seems to believe that the only purpose of going into business is making money. He fails to realize that each corporation has a different reason for existence. The man that was once the richest person in the world, Bill Gates, has donated billions of dollars generated by Microsoft towards social causes. The company is still the market leader in the software industry. Shareholders do not mind when a company that is profitable shares some of the wealth with the less fortunate members of our society. John Mackey went as far as saying that donating money towards social causes is stealing money from the investors. This view is completely biased and does not represent the views of the majority of businesspeople in the United States and abroad. I think that by making these absurd statements Mr. Mackey is the one that is decreasing the shareholder value of the company. Thus, restricting the responses to comparatively non-diversified target population. This was because of the inaccessibility to locations like Karachi and Islamabad. For improved results, future work may incorporate responses from such demographically diversified locations. Conclusions The term Employee does not contain illustration of the gender (male / female). Therefore, partiality on the basis of gender must be considered as an illicit practice at all levels. Humanity in Brave New World For years, authors and philosophers have satirized the ââ¬Å"perfectâ⬠society to incite change. In Brave New World, Aldous Huxley describes a so-called utopian society in which everyone is happy. This society is a ââ¬Å"controlled environment where technology has essentially [expunged] sufferingâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Brave New Worldâ⬠). A member of this society never needs to be inconvenienced by emotion, ââ¬Å"And if anything should go wrong, there's somaâ⬠(Huxley 220). Citizens spend their lives sleeping with as many people as they please, taking soma to dull any unpleasant thoughts that arise, and happily working in the jobs they were conditioned to want. They are genetically altered and conditioned to be averse to socially destructive things, like nature and families. They are trained to enjoy things that are socially beneficial: ââ¬Å"'That is the secret of happiness and virtue ââ¬â liking what you've got to do. All conditioning aims at that: making people lik e their inescapable social destiny'â⬠(Huxley 16). Citizens operate more like machinery, and less like humans. Humanity is defined as ââ¬Å"the quality of being humanâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Humanityâ⬠). To some, humanity refers to the aspects that define a human: love, compassion and emotions. Huxley satirizes humanity by dehumanizing the citizens in the Brave New World society. Huxley deletes love from society to satirize humanity. In the society, in order to maintain stability, ââ¬Å"'The greatest care is taken to prevent you from loving any one too much'â⬠(Huxley 237). If you have no loved ones, you have no one to mourn. When a citizen dies, life continues on as usual; there is no loss in efficiency. Huxley learned at a young age that grieving for a loved one is part of being a human: ââ¬Å"At the age of 14 Aldous... ...dure the hardships of life in order to enjoy the blessings. Sadness is a defining characteristic of a human being: ââ¬Å"In spite of their sadness-- because of it, even; for their sadness was the symptom of their love for one another-- the three young men were happyâ⬠(Huxley 242). Sadness is a symptom of joy. Loss is a symptom of love. But Huxley knew that it is worth it to feel both pain and happiness instead of nothing. Humanity is defined as ââ¬Å"the quality of being humanâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Humanityâ⬠). To some, humanity refers to the aspects that define a human: love, compassion and emotions. Huxley satirizes humanity by dehumanizing the citizens in the Brave New World society. Huxley deletes love from society to satirize humanity. In the society, in order to maintain stability, ââ¬Å"'The greatest care is taken to prevent you from loving any one too much'â⬠(Huxley 237). If you have no loved ones, you have no one to mourn. When a citizen dies, life continues on as usual; there is no loss in efficiency. Huxley learned at a young age that grieving for a loved one is part of being a human: ââ¬Å"At the age of 14 Aldous... ...dure the hardships of life in order to enjoy the blessings. Sadness is a defining characteristic of a human being: ââ¬Å"In spite of their sadness-- because of it, even; for their sadness was the symptom of their love for one another-- the three young men were happyâ⬠(Huxley 242). Sadness is a symptom of joy. Loss is a symptom of love. But Huxley knew that it is worth it to feel both pain and happiness instead of nothing. Economic Discrimination in Frank McCourt's Angelaââ¬â¢s Ashes As Jerome K. Jerome once said, ââ¬Å"It is easy enough to say that poverty is no crime. No; if it were men wouldnââ¬â¢t be ashamed of it. It is a blunder, though, and is punished as such. A poor man is despised the whole world over.â⬠This famous quote describes the way poor people are discriminated against and despised around the world by those who are better off. In the novel Angelaââ¬â¢s Ashes, by Frank McCourt, the characters are greatly discriminated against by all different parts of society because of their poverty. This makes their constant struggle to survive even harder and prevents them from climbing to the next rung in the social ladder. The poor are discriminated against and held down by the church, school, and their fellow impoverished neighbors, as well as the rest of the world around them to the point where they often give up trying to get out of poverty all together. Shockingly, the place where the McCourts are most discriminated against is the one place where they should feel wanted, loved, and equal to those around them, the Catholic Church. Frank McCourt, the main character who was a young teenager at the time, had the door slammed in his face by the Catholic Church on at least two occasions because of his poverty. The first time he is turned down by the church, Frankââ¬â¢s quest is to become an altar boy. The priest declares that the church is not looking for any more altar boys. However, the real reason Frank is turned down is because of his poverty. Angela, Frankââ¬â¢s moth er, is infuriated and exclaims, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll tell you what it is, ââ¬ËTis class distinction. They donââ¬â¢t want boys from lanes on the altar. They donââ¬â¢t want the ones with scabby knees and hair sticking up. O... ...d them to the point where they often give up trying to get out of poverty all together. The church will not allow them to be in any sort of position in the church, namely altar boys or priests. The school holds them back by putting them into filthy, run-down schools and teaching them very little while drilling into their minds the fact that no matter how hard they try, they cannot succeed in life. Unfortunately, even their neighbors hold them back by discouraging them to try anything in order to succeed and making fun of their impoverishment. The discrimination that they face daily holds them back and eventually stops them from even trying to succeed and better their lives. As Jerome K.
